Illinois Food Handler

Every state has different requirements when it comes to working in their state. Illinois has their own Food Handler certification that you must obtain in order to work at Hamra. We know that serving fresh, delicious and most importantly, safe food is what we are all about, so we fully embrace you having more knowledge.

Beginning on January 1, 2015, the Illinois Department of Public Health requires any person who handles, prepares, serves, sells or gives away food will be required to obtain an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) approved food handler certification within 30 days of hire.

If you are already a Certified Food Manager in the State of IL, or have an Illinois unexpired food handler certification, you do not need to obtain this training. A copy of the certification must be presented during the orientation.

The establishment must maintain a file containing the food service worker and the food service manager certificates for all employees that the Health Department can review during the inspection.

Certification Steps

  • Employee must obtain certification within 30 days of hire date.
  • If employee does not obtain certification within 30 days of the hire date, the employee will be removed from the schedule until the certification is obtained and presented to the manager.
  • If employee does not obtain certification within 60 days of the hire date, the employee will be terminated from the company.

Costs

  • Hamra Enterprises will cover the cost of the Food Handler training from an approved vendor.
    • The cost will cover up to 2 attempts to pass the test.
    • If the employee does not pass the test within the first 2 attempts, the cost will then need to be covered by the employee.
  • Employee is responsible for taking the training class during non-work hours.

Recertification

  • Approved ANSI certifications are valid for 3 years.
  • Employees are required to recertify every 3 years.
  • A lapse in certification will result in immediate removal from the schedule until recertification is obtained.
  • 60 days in lapse in certification will result in termination from the company.

I have read and understand that I am to obtain food safety training and a certificate within 30 days of hire, which is a requirement in the State of IL. Failure to receive the certificate will be a violation of the Illinois Department of Public Health Mandate and may result in termination.
